old manI was thinking about youth the other day. Not a strange occupation for a 66 year old guy, I suppose. However, the following poem came out of that contemplative moment.

The standard philosophy is that we are only young once. However, over the years I have learned that most of us have our youth still inside of us until the end of life.

It's the outside that grows old, and, that we, and others, treat as old. I sometimes wish they could see the young guy still inside. The world might be surprised at the man, and boy, they can no longer see.

I Was Young Once

I was young once,
In a place and time
That I,
Remember well and gladly.

Yet, despite the aches and pains
Of my present days
But, in different ways
Than in my youth.

Will I be young forever,
Although disguised within
A body others would call old?

I have no answer for that question
Until it happens
Or is past.

Perhaps one day I shall wake up
And find myself old
Both without and within.

In the meantime,
I will play each day,
Because, as they say,
You are only young once
And do not know
How long you will be young.
